About:
“For the last ten years, I’ve been dividing my time between Colorado and Philadelphia and have come to know a little corner of the Rockies. Recently, I began using mountain imagery in art-making, and it has become the dominant inspiration for an explosion of new work. I have made scores of photographs, as well as quick sketches and watercolors during summer hikes, which I use as source material back in my east coast studio. Through gesture and mark-making, I seek to capture the energy and power I experience in the high country.”
Artist Statement:
“Like many of us, I am drawn to wild place and the elemental power of mountains, where we can experience a regeneration of the spirit. My vision for my work is to translate the wilderness experience and how it impacts the human condition through the awareness of geologic time juxtaposed with the brevity of life. It’s the eternal “call of the wild,” the yearning for a connection with nature, where nature is dominant and humans are subservient. The use of expressive mark-making creates energy, a dance of color across the surface. Fragments of text add other layers of meaning, while photographs help “document” the visual experience. The result shatters the subjective image, perhaps disallowing a grandiose, sublime version of the western landscape. Instead, these pieces describe a hyper-kinetic, erratic landscape, more suited to our age of anxiety, while embracing the enduring rhythm and vibrancy of the high country. ”
