About Artists, Makers & Neighbors:

Artists, Makers & Neighbors is a DVAA mini-documentary series exploring the diverse backgrounds, interests, and histories of the people who walk through the doors of DVAA. Focusing on sustainability and creative expression, each episode explores how all of us approach these topics with contrasting perspectives.

Episode 1:

Pieces of the Philly Art Scene

The Philadelphia art scene is an expansive space that is constantly evolving and changing, and encompassing all types of art forms and artists from a diverse range of backgrounds. Creating more than just art, but a community. Told through the perspective of DVAA, here's a look into local art history, today's artistic tempo and visions of what's to come.

Episode 2:

Who is DVAA?

In 1931, Da Vinci Art Alliance was started in South Philadelphia by sixteen Italian immigrants who had been shut out of Philly’s professional art scene. In response, they created their own space to share their art, skills, and resources. In the ‘60s they moved into 704 Catharine St, which has been DVAA’s home ever since. Since then we‘ve been continuing the vision of our founders: building community through art. However, it’s never been easy. By the ’90s, Da Vinci Art Alliance needed rehabilitation, structurally and organizationally. As told by some of our community members, here is how artists revolutionized DVAA.

Episode 3:

Sustaining Practices

In this episode, we explore how sustainability plays a part in the artistic practices of the DVAA creative community - establishing a lasting impact on those touched by their work. Whether sustainability is through material recycling, cultural preservation, or the conservation of conversation it is an invaluable tool in the practice of art making.
