About:
Joseph Eggleston (b. 1987, New York) is a figurative painter whose work namely consists of male and gender neutral portraiture.
Inspired by the fantasy of Rococo paintings and the vibrant colors of Impressionist landscapes, Eggleston builds upon the relationship one color has next to another to construct figures that patiently emerge out of the saturated oil paints. His work is created through a queer lens that strives to challenge the notion that heterosexual desire is ‘normal.’
Eggleston obtained his BFA in Fine Arts from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, NY. As of 2018, Eggleston lives and works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His work has been included in group exhibitions in New York and Philadelphia.
Artist Statement:
“Within my work I explore figurative painting as a medium to express my thoughts and ideas about: individual and group identity, sexual orientation, queer stereotypes, and the societal construction of gender identity.
My work is representational but still celebrates the brushstroke, often letting strokes of paint stand alone after one swipe and creating areas that are left broken down and unfinished. I like to use a lot of color (often too much) and genuinely enjoy playing around with how one color interacts with another.
I have a desire to depict subject matter that is uncommon, creating faces, figures, and scenes that go typically unseen in contemporary fine art.”
