Finding Healing In The Remnants

A SOLO EXHIBITION by Sammy Kovnat (SKOVeS)

On View October 31 - November 17 Opening Friday, November 1 from 5 - 8 PM Artist Talk & Closing Sunday, November 17 from 12 - 2 PM

About the exhibition:

When a plate is broken in the home it acts like an alarm. It is an indication that something shameful has occurred, this accidental moment of destruction needs to be remedied and the evidence must be swept up and discarded. We are not taught how to handle plate shards after a plate is no longer whole, we are taught to make the evidence of fracturing disappear.

This is the guiding metaphor that all of my mosaics are rooted in. If we think of ourselves as plates, fractured by life experiences, what happens after we are broken? Can we hold the delicate shards created by our trauma with tenderness, can we create healing for ourselves?

This exhibition is an exploration of the ways in which feeling broken can transform us, as well as the things we can do to transform ourselves through that healing process. To Kovnat this looks like the journey of creating new, familiar, yet different composites of who we once were, rebuilt into an image of our own making, be it through collages, mosaic, or weavings.

Finding Healing In The Remnants will be on view in Gallery 2 at Da Vinci Art Alliance starting October 31 until November 17. The opening reception will take place on Friday, November 1, from 4-7 pm.
