OPEN CALL FOR ART Archive of the Now

How do the objects we preserve or create over time represent an archive?

How does the act of preservation shape a narrative of the now?

Archive of the Now brings together the work and collected objects of DVAA members in Gallery 2 to shape a collective archive as an exhibition. Historically, organized collections of ephemera have been used to catalog a specific moment in time and the people associated with a space, movement, industry, etc. As history moves forward and our collective understanding of the past changes, how does our relationship to collections change? While we are living in a time where public records of history are removed by federal agents, how do we continue to preserve history and stories?

Being an archivist is being a curator of time. What does it mean to bring together the works and ephemera of the DVAA members into a temporary archival space, and what narrative will we shape together? For this open call, the DVAA Exhibition Committee seeks artwork and collected objects that focus on personal histories, familial relationships, preservation efforts, reinterpreted narratives, collected objects of significance, and preserved specimens. What would you want included in your time capsule?

Guidelines and Submission Requirements

All artwork must respond to the theme in some way. Think about “Why is this object a part of your archive? What narrative are you shaping?” when you’re selecting your work.

The theme can be interpreted in many ways, and we look forward to seeing what it brings to mind for you!

Submissions are for DVAA members only, and there is no submission cost.

Size restrictions

There is a 28” limitation for wall-mounted artwork, with variable dimensions for non-wall-mounted submissions accepted on a case-by-case basis. We are also accepting video works which can be displayed on a monitor. Objects of significance and preserved specimens can also be submitted, with notes about hanging/display intent.

All work must be ready to install (framed, wired, ready for pedestal, etc).

No more than 3 artworks per submission.
Members are not guaranteed acceptance into this exhibition.
