vanessa is a multi-media artist and creator who works with reclaimed items, like paints, canvases, frames, and fabrics, to create one-of-a-kind fine art pieces. each piece reflects and celebrates memory, emotion, and lived experience. she uses a combination of textures, layers, and pigments to express the profound complexities of being human. vanessa is a queer, neurodivergent, mixed-race Black woman living and creating in Philly, PA.

Artist Statement:

My work reflects and celebrates memories, emotions, and lived experiences. I use a combination of textures, layers, and pigments to express the profound depth of being human. I’m constantly inspired by our ability to process and heal from the ebbs and flows of life. My work honors our flaws, strengths, traumas, and triumphs. I hope to reflect the profound beauty and complexity we all hold with compassion and reverence.

I am passionate about using overlooked, underused, and discarded items to create abstract art. As a person existing during the climate crisis, prioritizing sustainability while creating art is essential. I am passionate about using overlooked, underused, and discarded items to create abstract art. Each piece I make uses recycled and upcycled items from local thrifting organizations and facebook marketplace.

In addition, my work features pigment and dyes from organic items like coffee, tea, flowers, clay, and vegetable scraps. Creating and using natural dyes in my work brings me endless joy and helps me develop a deeper connection with each piece.
