Holiday card making with artist, Eleanor Levie

About the exhibition:

Addressing the global trash crisis, Eleanor Levie upcycles single-use packaging that once held teabags, coffee, produce, and animal feed. Damaged vintage linens, old zippers, torn dress patterns, and even scrap metal found on the street find a place in mixed-media collages, which are layered onto fabric and heavily stitched. This body of work comes together for Trash Stash Quilt Art, a solo exhibit of quilted refuse that will open at Da Vinci Art Alliance on Wednesday, December 2nd and will be available online as a video walkthrough until December 20th. An opening reception will be held on Zoom at 7:45pm on December 2nd.

This exhibit is not only notable for the highly unusual materials used in these quilts for the wall and art vases, but it inspires family engagement. The works grab attention with whimsy, folk art, and word play. They also serve to remind viewers to recognize global warming, and to initiate table-talk at home about how we can all reduce, recycle, and repurpose. The public is invited to create folk-art with recycled materials at home, through Eleanor’s video tutorial on the website. Everyone in the family will discover how to make cards for any winter holiday, using items like old calendars and packaging that might ordinarily be pitched. Another activity, an “I Spy” challenge, will have kids of all ages searching for specific images among the packaging graphics and pictorial subjects of the art quilts. The exhibit and accompanying activities are free for all at Da Vinci Art Alliance’s website beginning December 2nd.
