Julia Grosso is an interdisciplinary painter living and working in Philadelphia, PA. Her work is informed by emotional processing, dream interpretation, and materials processes learned at various odd-jobs post undergrad. She received her BFA in Painting from Syracuse University in 2014.

Artist Statement:

I make use of written and drawn elements and mixed media to showcase a range of decorated/defaced texture. The works pay homage to battles with vulnerability, anxiety, acceptance and decision paralysis among other things. My hand is generally intuitive and gestural across media. Utilizing a muted palette reminiscent of grit and construction-site annotation, I layer color and material with rhythmic, graphic patterns and figurative suggestion. The works are often dissected, peeled apart, and reattached to form anew. This union of visual language seems impossible to turn away from, and truly reminds me of a buzzard painting a self portrait- Which, I think, would also be impossible to turn away from. I mean, imagine?
