INSCAPE: Landscape of the Self

Solo Exhibition by Sara Allen IN GALLERY 2 @ DVAA

Exhibition Runs: May 4th - May 25th

About the exhibition:

INSCAPE: Landscape of the self is a series of photographs by Sara Allen. The collection moves from black and white portraits to color abstractions of the human body. With this series Sara was finding ways to express the feelings of isolation, loneliness, and pensiveness prompted by the pandemic. She began to explore photography that offered unusual perspectives, thus challenging the viewer to see the aging body in new ways. By showing herself so intimately, Sara hopes that the emotions being expressed extend beyond her own personal sphere. The imagery offers a connection not only between the artist and herself but also between the artist and the viewer, creating space to appreciate the self.

INSCAPE: Landscape of the self will be on view in Gallery 2 beginning May 4th, and will be available as a video walkthrough shortly after. Join us at Da Vinci Art Alliance for the opening reception on May 5th, from 4-7pm.

About the artist:

Sara Allen made snapshots over the years but left serious photography to “real” artists. After the death of her husband and retirement from teaching English literature to middle schoolers, she began to think about creating images with a sense of purpose. Moving to a Nikon SLR, she began the long process of becoming a photographer. She took photo classes to understand, first, her digital camera and software, and then the nature of the medium itself.

All the elements of photography were new to her. Instead of thinking only of the object in her viewfinder, she began to think about the elements within a frame that capture a moment in time and space - the essence of photography. She continues to learn to see more acutely. She persists in her attempts to create images that go beyond the surface of things.
