Found and Made
A two-person Exhibition by howard Brunner and Carol wisker IN GALLERY 1 @ DVAA
Exhibition Runs: May 4th - June 22nd
About the exhibition:
DVAA is pleased to present Found and Made, a two-person exhibit by photographer, Howard Brunner and sculpture artist, Carol Wisker. An exploration of the city and the world around them, Found and Made represents a journey of discovery and reconciliation.
For Howard, an intuitive process of unconscious artmaking, finding and photographing anything that draws him in. All the images were shot with a handheld camera on long walks around Philadelphia, with no agenda, ambition, or intention to make art. Howard’s process is a matter of becoming immersed in the spectacle of the urban environment and noticing those moments when he feels emotionally or psychologically connected to what he sees. Through his photographs, Howard is able to capture an intimate view of Philadelphia through his eyes and lens.
For Carol, Found and Made reflects her passionate interest in the themes that are dominant in today’s culture – racial injustice, environmental disruption, feminism, and war. Everyday found and recycled objects become her canvases. The mannequins, furniture, yarn and cloth or wood objects are used as metaphors in her sculptural creations. Fabrications often contain labor-intensive processes of coiling, deconstruction of textiles, wrapping or cutting thousands of individual medallions of raw, natural cotton cording. Once assembled, these artistic outputs become analogous to the surfaces of the body, the surfaces of our environment or reflect personal or collective psychological tension.
In Found and Made, both artists come to terms with the world around them through different processes, each finding their subjects from their own unique perceptions, and then making their art. The “finding and making” process is central to their partnership of many years. Found and Made by Howard Brunner and Carol Wisker will be on view in Gallery 1 at Da Vinci Art Alliance until June 22nd. Join us for a reception on June 2nd from 4-7pm.
