Bourdieu on Artists and Gatekeepers
About the program:
Critical Theory Discourse is a conversational gathering that allows DVAA members to tackle challenging works of art theory and history together. Each month, we discuss a new topic based on a new reading, podcast, or video that is distributed by DVAA in advance of the program. Critical Theory is meant to foster challenging dialogue about the art world and its context. All DVAA Members are welcome!
About this event:
Understanding Bourdieu, Chapter 9: Art and Artists
by Tony Schirato, Geoff Danaher, and Jennifer Webb. published 2002
Pierre Bourdieu was a social scientist known for his contributions to cultural and media studies. Unlike many historical champions of media studies, Bourdieu himself was also an artist. Therefore his perspective on the cultural framework that holds up the Art World are especially insightful for artist and historian alike.
How do artists balance the conflicting forces of 'art for art's sake' and market driven capitalism? Moreover, how do artists 'play the game' of cultural capital in a winner take all society?
