Marx (and friends) on Art
About the program:
"Critical Theory Discourse" is a conversational gathering facilitated by DVAA Exhibitions & Programming Director, Bryant Girsch. This program allows DVAA members to tackle challenging works of art theory and history together.
About this event:
This month's "Critical Theory Discourse" session will study art from a dialectical materialist lens. By examining historical materialism and aesthetic theory, we will form ideas about how contemporary art functions in a class society. We are reading an excerpt from Theodor Adorno's Aesthetic Theory titled “Art, Society, Aesthetics” as well as an excerpt from “Marx & Engels: On Literature & Art” by Lee Baxandall and Stefan Morawki.
In support of these readings, we recommend an episode of Red Menace titled “Socialism: Utopian and Scientific by Fredrich Engles”. https://revolutionaryleftradio.libsyn.com/red-menace.
To participate in this program: register for the event, download and read the pdfs, and then join the discussion at DVAA with wine!
