About the exhibition:

How does one reclaim joy and say ‘yes’ to the moment, to the assertion of ‘togetherness,’ while in times of great strife and grief? “Yes”, a solo exhibition by Pomona Za, proudly presented by Da Vinci Art Alliance, grants the viewer tender access to scenes of yearning and belonging that reshape the artist's experience and celebrate and highlight our shared humanity, reminding us of what’s possible.

Featuring large and small-scale oil paintings and sketched drawings of vibrantly colored scenes set in coffee shops, lively music venues, and intimate moments of connection between two or more people, this body of work is also a sincere tribute to both West Philadelphia and upstate New York. In conjunction with Pomona’s solo exhibition, “Yes”, we’re also happy to present “Yes, Please”, an afternoon of music with local bands Built by Scriabin, Song People, Strawberry Hands, and TRUDY; these musicians are some of the artist’s beloved friends as well as early inspiration behind several pieces of the work.

“Through art we can draw ourselves into worlds we wish to inhabit. Over a year ago, I attended two small music shows at which I made several sketches. Months later, during a period of loneliness, these experiences and their attendant drawings became anchors. They, along with several drawings I had made at West Philly coffee shops, generated vibrant paintings which were markedly different from my other work. Throughout the year, I found more moments, more images. I was making pictures I wanted to live in. The show title, Yes, is from an unassuming poster which was on stage at one of the shows. Yes to the moment, yes to our lives.” says Pomona of the exhibition.

ABOUT THE Artists:

Pomona (b.1984, they/her) is a queer, disabled artist living in Philadelphia. Their work has dealt with images arising from visions and dreams, delving into the unconscious and its symbols. In this new body of work at Da Vinci Art Alliance, Pomona is attending to collaged moments of everyday experience - honoring memory, the transcendent mundane, and togetherness.
