About:
Temi Loye is a Nigerian-American writer and artist living in Philadelphia, PA. Through analog collage, zines, and writing, they explore the multi-dimensional nature of time, the textures of Black queer life, and the utility of deviance and illegibility under empire. Temi is guided by this central question: how does opening the underbelly of ourselves then allow us to open the underbelly of the world? Temi is the creator of Glorious Blasphemy Zine, a publication that confronts traditional Christianity by engaging in what is considered blasphemous—Blackness, transness, queerness, and desire. Temi’s writing has appeared or is forthcoming in several publications, including Sinister Wisdom, The Book of Being: A Queer Prayer Book, and The Black Non-Binary Archive.
Artist Statement:
I create analog collages to investigate the multi-dimensional nature of time. By combining my photography with archival images, I explore nonlinearity, how the present and the past are always simultaneously collapsing onto one another. I approach each piece as a practice in bending and stretching time, using collage to evoke feelings on the nowness of being. Through my work, I look to unravel the way time has been shaped by capitalism, seen as a linear means to an end (e.g., productivity, exploitation), and instead engage with an African view of time, one that is spiraled, layered, and malleable.
