Maia Engel is a multidisciplinary artist whose work blends mythic imagination, emotional intuition, and a finely tuned sense of visual storytelling. Raised in an environment where books, ideas, and creativity were part of daily life, Maia developed her artistic voice early drawing in the margins of her father’s academic texts and experimenting with color long before she understood technique. That instinctive beginning still shapes her practice today.

Her paintings explore the tension between the seen and the unseen, merging surrealist symbolism with contemporary aesthetics. Maia’s compositions often center on luminous color, layered textures, and dreamlike figures that feel both intimate and universal. Artist Statement:

My work is rooted in the belief that imagination is a form of truth. I paint to uncover the symbolic structures that live beneath everyday experience mythic fragments, emotional currents, and dreamlike narratives that feel both deeply personal and universally shared. These images emerge intuitively, often beginning as small gestures or marks that evolve into figures, landscapes, and abstract forms with their own internal logic.

Color is my primary language. I use luminous, saturated hues to build emotional architecture within each piece, allowing brightness to guide the viewer toward clarity, energy, and introspection. Texture and layering play an equally important role; they mirror the way memory accumulates, shifts, and reveals itself over time. The resulting compositions occupy a space between surrealism and contemporary symbolism, inviting viewers to step into worlds that feel familiar yet transformed.

My practice is shaped by a deep sensitivity to detail, nuance, and sensory experience. The environments and emotional landscapes I move through become part of the visual vocabulary of my paintings, informing the symbols, atmospheres, and internal mythologies that recur throughout my work. This attentiveness to perception and meaning gives the paintings their distinct tone refined, intuitive, and grounded in the beauty of human experience.
