About the exhibition:

“In Circulation” is a solo exhibition by Linda Dubin Garfield Fellow Natalie Manes. Comprised of wheat-pasted fragments from the John J. Wilcox Jr. Lending Library at the William Way LGBT Community Center, the oldest LGBTQ+ library in the country, and printed at BYO Print Center, Manes presents this work as a testament to the legacy of Queer radical history. 

“As public interventions, the wheatpastes could fade, tear, deteriorate, or be ripped down, in contrast to the longevity of the materials they exhibit. Though ephemeral, they convey urgency: libraries and archives are not passive but living records and guides to how people have organized, survived, and resisted. People need access to their history to understand the past and navigate their futures. With the Lending Library currently closed to the public due to William Way’s building closure, these wheatpastes reactivate the library and archives. By moving these fragments of the library into the street, this work temporarily shifts them back into public access.” - Manes

About the artist:

Natalie Manes is a printmaker and weaver based in Philadelphia. Heavily influenced by bodies of writing grounded in Queer resistance, they intertwine historical references with contemporary narratives. Drawn to both practices for their emphasis on process, Manes creates new spaces for existence outside and beyond the binary. They received a BFA in Printmaking from Tyler School of Art and Architecture and currently work as an art instructor at the Center for Creative Works.
