About the exhibition:
Multidisciplinary artist Julie Woodard began grieving twenty years ago. The loss of her grandmothers, then her aunt, then her mother propelled her to weave their belongings and stories into her art practice; an act of immortalization and detachment, grieving and growth. “Good Grief,” curated by Woodard, explores how seven artists—each with intimate experiences with loss—process, translate, and transform grief through their work. From still lifes and graphic narratives to portals and shrines, “Good Grief” brings together textiles, sculpture, painting, printmaking, collage, cut paper, tile mosaic, comics, and poetry.
“In addition to personal and familial loss,” Woodard says of the exhibition, “the work also speaks to collective grief, from war and genocide to climate change and ecological destruction. Grief touches us all. Come consider how you might creatively express your own in a way that feels good.”
About the curator:
Julie Woodard is a Philadelphia-based artist, educator, and self-described “doula of discarded things.” Working with repurposed materials, she creates impressionistic landscapes, multimedia installations, functional sculptures, and wearable works that weave together seemingly disparate ideas. Julie works across textiles, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, collage, and natural pigments, often using shifts in scale to explore relationships between the intimate and monumental, personal and environmental. She is also a songwriter, translating many of her visual pieces into song. For over twenty years, Julie has worked across Philadelphia’s cultural sector as an educator and curator, teaching in museums, schools, and community spaces, while designing and curating immersive art experiences for cultural and civic institutions. She is a 2026 recipient of CFEVA’s New Courtland Artist Fellowship and will be an InLiquid’s Park Towne Place Artist in Residence in 2027. Julie holds degrees from Temple University and the University of the Arts.
