Fang Norwood

About:

Fang Norwood (b.1968) is a self-taught artist living in the greater Philadelphia area. She has had impaired vision from a medical condition in one eye since she was 22, and suffered a traumatic brain injury resulting in impaired memory when she was 30. As a person and as an artist, she believes in and has found wholesomeness as well as poeticness in both life and painting.

In 2026, Fang completed an online CE Painting Studies certificate with RISD, where her thesis project can be viewed at the online celebration of certificate completion. She also completed an in-person Figure Studies certificate (CE) at PAFA, where her work has been included in the juried exhibition of student works. She is currently affiliated with Artists Equity, Da Vinci Art Alliance, Wayne Art Center, Mt. Airy Art Garage, Rehoboth Art League, Maryland Federation of Art, and Delaware Art Museum. She has a place in multiple upcoming group exhibitions in the summer and fall.

Artist Statement:

In my practice, I explore compositional interests and color relations through figurative forms. , and I work mainly on canvas with oil and acrylic. I usually start with life drawings and go through the process of simplification and abstraction in creating a painting. I like to explore the physicality of the medium during the process, markings, both accidental and intentional, additive and reductive, often coexist, creating desired layers and textures. I aim to create a contemplative mood and share a quiet inner moment through each visual expression.

To me, the act of painting is personal: is to wonder, to investigate, to talk and dance to the inner self; the painting surface is the recording of time, energy, thoughts, feelings, searching, and discovery in this process; the created image is a portal to the internal world.

I believe each of us has a unique internal world. I hope the expressions of this world can evoke resonance in some others.
