Artist Statement:
The stories and images I create will share a sense of wonder and imagination that convey the protagonists in a way that they normally do not see themselves. It is my goal to share stories that connect with the joys, wonders, excitement and imagination of our community from the lens of true experience. It is imperative for minorities to have pride in their culture and their stories and see themselves as a part of the world we live in.
Creating works reflective of women's inner world that fuels how she shows up in the outer world. A reflection on interpersonal relationships in my life, observations, and cultural responses to this inner / outer world balance.
The motif of the primary figure is the Mami Wata; mythical creatures that hold the power of the ocean and transformation. Both celebrated and feared for their freedom and command of the water and all of its creatures. A charming goddess archetype, yet flawed and heavily influenced by her emotion.
Symbols, postures, and patterns from Ancient Kemetic faith as well as Adinkra symbols. A nod to the IFE goddess Yemi Ya, with cowrie shells and veils as a sign of divinity (gold).
I have created 13 pieces of art reflecting this concept in watercolor painting and ink. The watercolors are done on 5X7 cotton handmade paper. The paper is iridescent, soft textured, water soluble with natural edges. Each piece is framed in wood with float mounting and professional assembly. They are primed for professional gallery hanging.
