Space Melt Cinema proudly presents our favorite movie, Hellzapoppin’ (1941), at Da Vinci Art Alliance (704 Catherine St) on December 13th! Doors open at 7:00 and the film begins at 7:30.
“We at Space Melt Cinema like to say “That’s my favorite movie,” but this time we mean it. Hellzapoppin’ is our favorite movie. Hellzapoppin’ (1941) is a film so funny, so absurd, so chaotic, that you absolutely have to see it for yourself. Adapted from Olsen and Johnson’s Broadway hit, Hellzapoppin’ challenges everything you would expect from a 1940s Hollywood comedy. If I have to summarize it, it is a movie within a movie within a nervous breakdown. It is a self-sabotaging masterpiece that feels decades ahead of its time. Roll in your grave meta-comedy. And do not even get me started on the Lindy Hop scene. As if the movie were not already a masterpiece, the Lindy Hop sequence remains one of the most electrifying moments of dance ever captured on film. During the Broadway run of Hellzapoppin’, they planted audience members who would act out bits, like loudly announcing they were going to the bathroom. We will not be doing that. We are not funnier than this movie. Nothing is funnier than Hellzapoppin’.”
