Memory Box Workshop with Julie Woodard

  • Da Vinci Art Alliance 704 Catharine Street Philadelphia, PA, 19147 United States (map)

Do you have someone, somewhere, or something special you’d like to remember?

As part of Good Grief, join us for a hands-on workshop exploring memory, loss, and the ways we keep what we love close. Together, we’ll create miniature memory boxes—small, intimate containers filled with images, objects, words, and other meaningful fragments that honor a person, pet, place, or moment that has shaped our lives.

Bring a photograph, piece of fabric or clothing, handwritten note, letter, recipe, ticket stub, pressed flower, small keepsake, or other treasured object to incorporate into your box. You might also bring a photocopy of a photograph, a favorite phrase or poem, a scrap of wrapping paper, a map, or anything else that evokes a particular memory. Items should be small enough to fit inside a tin approximately the size of an Altoids box. If you don't have anything to bring, that's okay—we'll have additional materials available to spark ideas.

We’ll provide the tin boxes, adhesives, collage materials, papers, and other supplies. Through collage, layering, arranging, sewing, and embellishing, you’ll create a personal space for memory and remembrance.

The workshop will also offer time to share stories. As we work, participants will have the opportunity to talk about the person, place, pet, or memory they are honoring—sharing as much or as little as feels comfortable. Together, we’ll consider how the objects we save can carry stories, preserve connections, and help us hold what might otherwise be lost.

No artistic experience is necessary. Come with a memory, a few meaningful objects, or simply an open heart. Leave with a small box that holds something big: a story, a connection, and a piece of what you want to remember.
