June Critical Theory

Reading: Stonewall was a Riot

About the program:

Critical Theory Discourse is a conversational gathering that allows DVAA members to tackle challenging works of art theory and history together. Each month, we discuss a new topic based on a new reading, podcast, or video that is distributed by DVAA in advance of the program. Critical Theory is meant to foster challenging dialogue about the art world and its context. All DVAA Members are welcome!

About the Reading:

In honor of Pride Month, we will be discussing Stonewall Was a Riot by Be Oakley from Genderfail Press for June Critical Theory. The Stonewall Riots gave a victimized community a desperately needed symbol for pride. However, depictions of Sontewall (and queer movements in general) have been historically whitewashed. Queer people of colour are continuously excluded and marginalised from a movement that was started by black queer trans women. Stonewall Was a Riot challenges the discourse surrounding queer resistance movements, and looks to a future that is truly intersectional.

How to Participate:

Due to enforced social distancing, Critical Theory is going digital! To maintain the safety of our Members and staff, we will be hosting a ZOOM conference instead of an in-person discussion.

To participate in the digital program: register for the event, read the text, and then join the discussion on ZOOM!
