How To Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy
About the program:
Critical Theory Discourse is a conversational gathering that allows DVAA members to tackle challenging works of art theory and history together. Each month, we discuss a new topic based on a new reading, podcast, or video that is distributed by DVAA in advance of the program. Critical Theory is meant to foster challenging dialogue about the art world and its context. All DVAA Members are welcome!
About this event:
How To Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy by Jenny Odell
How to do Nothing is an action plan for thinking outside of capitalist narratives of efficiency and techno-determinism. Odell sees our attention as the most precious—and overdrawn—resource we have. And we must actively and continuously choose how we use it. We might not spend it on things that capitalism has deemed important … but once we can start paying a new kind of attention, she writes, we can undertake bolder forms of political action, reimagine humankind’s role in the environment, and arrive at more meaningful understandings of happiness and progress.
How to Participate:
Due to enforced social distancing, Critical Theory is going digital! To maintain the safety of our Members and staff, we will be hosting a ZOOM conference instead of an in-person discussion.
To participate in the digital program: register for the event, read the text, and then join the discussion on ZOOM!
