On the Edge of Precarity
About the program:
Critical Theory Discourse is a conversational gathering that allows DVAA members to tackle challenging works of art theory and history together. Each month, we discuss a new topic based on a new reading, podcast, or video that is distributed by DVAA in advance of the program. Critical Theory is meant to foster challenging dialogue about the art world and its context. All DVAA Members are welcome!
About this event:
The Edge of Precarity: Art-Work, Productivity, & Public Funding, Danielle Degon 2018
DVAA Member Danielle Degon wrote this short essay-zine in conjunction with The Edge of Precarity at Little Berlin in 2018. The text is a call to action for artists and other exploited service workers feeling alienated by their constant quest for self-optimization. Through survey data and personal experience, Danielle traces the reasons why artists don’t get paid and provides evidence for why they should. After examining the effects of wage-labor and individualism on artists, she draws conclusions for the abolition of work and productivity.
How to Participate:
Due to enforced social distancing, Critical Theory is going digital! To maintain the safety of our Members and staff, we will be hosting a ZOOM conference instead of an in-person discussion.
