Stuart Hall on Representation
About the program:
Critical Theory Discourse is a conversational gathering that allows DVAA members to tackle challenging works of art theory and history together. Each month, we discuss a new topic based on a new reading, podcast, or video that is distributed by DVAA in advance of the program. Critical Theory is meant to foster challenging dialogue about the art world and its context. All DVAA Members are welcome!
About this event:
Chapter 1: The Work of Representation by Stuart Hall. published 1997
With Hall as our guide, Critical Theory at DVAA will examine why representation is such a critical element in the study of art and mass culture. Does language (visual or linguistic) simply reflect a meaning which already exists out there in the world of objects, people, and events? Does language express only the intended meaning behind its speakers' message? Or is meaning constructed in and through language itself?
How to Participate:
Due to enforced social distancing, Critical Theory is going digital! To maintain the safety of our Members and staff, we will be hosting a ZOOM conference instead of an in-person discussion.
To participate in the digital program: register for the event, read the text, and then join the discussion on ZOOM!
