A Farmer Jawn Interactive Talk & Hanging Collage Making Workshop
This will be an interactive talk with the manager of the Elkins Park farm run by Farmer Jawn, a Black owned organization and related nonprofit that does urban, regenerative, organic farming. Some topics of interest are experimental crops being planted, such as Nigerian spinach, to address new planting zones due to climate change; food deserts and insecurity; the resurgence of some agricultural practices and knowledge that were repressed during slavery; corporate agribusiness and its harm to the environment, agricultural workers, and the foods we eat; community gardens; windowsill and container gardens; and cooking and fermentation techniques.
Complementing this talk, and throughout the show, there will also be a table and chairs set up by the window. Collage materials and tools, such as scissors, papers, paint, twine, etc. will be provided. Cables or rods will be mounted across the bay windows. Visitors will be invited to create their own hanging collages, to echo some of those in the exhibit, that will hang in the window as their own art pieces. In coordination with the farm talk specifically, attendees who wish to stay after the talk to create these collage hangings, might consider incorporating shapes and images of plants, fruits, flowers, or vegetables inspired by the talk.
