Andrew Hart

About:

Andrew Hart is trained as as an architect and designer, and currently is Assistant Professor of Architecture for Visualization and Digital Fabrication at Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) College of Architecture and the Built Environment. Raised in northeastern Pennsylvania and living in North Philadelphia for the past 20 years his work is interested in the creative process, the collection and communication of layers of history in the landscape, and the intersection of traditional and modern techniques of representation to communicate and share experiences between communities, designers, and students. In his work the work of Italian baroque and Philadelphia industry collide and overlap. Andrew's work is fueled by collaborative work between artists, designers, and citizens.

Artist Statement:

“My research, artwork, and teaching are overlap between digital and analog processes of representation As a designer and professor of architecture I find it is essential to be adept with both a pencil and a laser and that these tools are at their best when used in combination – as a hybrid. Design is at its best as a collaborative effort between clients, experts, craftspeople, students, public – creating an engaging and immersive experience, and I have spent my professional and academic careers connecting people and space with lines drawn in both
graphite and pixels. Every design collaboration or process is an accretion of layers – displaying and communicating these layers in an accessible way engages and connects people to design and creative arts.

Making these connections in familiar and unexpected ways is something I relish in my work. In recent exhibits, Visible Cities (DVAA 2019) explored showcasing the creative process through an exhibition of collected artists sketchbooks and process drawings and illustrations of creative imagination, and Rocky ReRuns (DVAA 2018) explored familiar sources (the film Rocky) as a way of inspecting life in the city in simultaneously new and old ways). This project was undertaken as both contributing artist and curator (working with another co-curator and organizing 13 artists for the exhibition). ”
