About:

Alicia Finger is a Philadelphia based artist, whose work focuses on the process of deconstructing and assembling. Finger received her BFA from Arcadia University with a concentration in oil painting and her MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She began experimenting with cut paper and installation while receiving her MFA. These experimentations have evolved into newer works that focus on merging the act of cutting paper and collage with her background in painting. Finger is currently an Instructor and Coordinator of Color and Design and Color Theory at Rowan University. In addition to teaching, she is a live event painter and a member of Philadelphia Collage Works.

Artist Statement:

Cutting paper has become a form of meditation. The inability to “uncut” the piece forces a sense of confidence in my decision making and the evolution of the work. Cutting each piece by hand without a preconceived design is an important factor of this work, revealing the impossibility of creating the same design twice.

In these works, I found a way to merge my connection to painting and my need to control the process of rebuilding. Through manipulating multiple layers of hand-painted paper, I want to celebrate the process of creating, the act of demolishing the work through cutting away, the ability to conceal parts of the work and the reemergence of a new work. I am drawn to creating these cut paper pieces by the need to reconnect in both my life and my art, I find a sense of focus and intimacy in working on these.
