About:

Lucy H. West is a Philadelphia-based artist originally from Tokyo, Japan. Her work portrays human consciousness and inner experiences shared by many of us – while also reflecting her own identity of being a biracial, binational, bilingual, spiritual, queer, food-loving, woman. West graduated from Dickinson College in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in Studio Art and a minor in Economics. Her diverse educational background includes studying visual art at Temple University in Rome, Italy, and the International School in Tokyo, Japan. In 2021 she traveled to Madrid, Spain, for an artist residency to further advance her art education and practice. She has shown work as well as had work acquired in these countries. West’s work was also recently acquired by the University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Medicine. She was selected to be the first artist in the Social Justice Initiative’s newfound program to represent local artists to promote diversity and inclusion in their local community. West continuously strives to create personal connections and a community around positivity, love for self, and love for life through her art.

Artist Statement:

“My recent works convey the relationship and connection between our bodies and our minds and embody the complexities of the human consciousness. Although the physical and inner worlds are separate entities, they are interconnected in their coexistence and influences on one another. Deepening our understanding of this connection is what I believe being mindful and present with ourselves is about. Mental health, well-being, and meditation are also core themes within my work as it correlates to understanding the self. Much of my art depicts those very magical moments where I felt whole and in tune with whatever I was experiencing. My art practice is intuitive in nature to create works that are vulnerable and authentic to my identity. Through visualizing the human consciousness from my perspective, I hope to create a bridge for viewers to connect with me, reflect on themselves, and connect with one another in social consciousness.”
