ABOUT:

Lara Bros (she/hers) is a visual artist living and working in Philadelphia. She has a BA in Art History from Drexel University, and has shown her work at University City Arts League, Philly Art Collective Gallery, Rincliffe Gallery at Drexel University, Warehouse on Krams, and Underground Arts.

Artist Statement:

Her body of work resides mainly in collage, and occasionally textile arts. Her work focuses on piecing together images and text to convey complex feelings and experiences that often escape description. She explores themes of memory, nostalgia, and how vulnerability (or fear of vulnerability) informs our perspectives, using her own and shared experiences. By piecing together different mediums, she believes that observers are enticed to not just be viewers, and to absorb the telling of these experiences. To not just hold the familiarity of shared experiences, but to participate in the telling and preservation of a story by lending their own perspectives and experiences. Lara practices art in the spirit of abolition, believing that creative practices provide us with the imagination and different modes of thinking that we need to radically re-imagine our society and relationships with one another.

Her current pieces explore elusive practices of spirituality and divinity that have been coded feminine, such as tarot reading and candle magick. Her hope is that the imagery she creates resonates with feelings and experiences that invoke nostalgia or difficult to capture feelings, and encourage different ways of participating with art practices.
