DVAA Artist, Başak Kılıçbeyli, combine mythology and her childhood drawings in A series of fiber art

Başak combines the purity of childhood with an intimate softness of home by bringing her illustrations to life on tapestries and rugs. Each piece playfully commenting on topics close to her. Like mythological stories, her artwork takes autobiographical and fact-based subject matter, and propels them into a reality all their own.

Başak’s artwork is imaginative, playful and so so beautiful. We are thrilled that She will be exhibiting at DVAA in Spring 2022 in the backyard!

Children’s artistic creations are often forgotten about, brushed aside as juvenile absurdities. For DVAA member, Başak Kılıçbeyli, they represent more. Her childhood drawings remind her of who she was and is.

“Mythological stories and childhood drawings have always made me feel grounded. They clue me into what happened in life both in a wider and personal sense. Currently, they inspire my creative practice to a great extent. So, I frequently revisit them and seek to reflect their non-heteronormative nature on soft & cozy textured surfaces.” - Başak Kılıçbeyli
