About the reading:
This month’s reading: The Italian Teacher by Tom Rachman
The Italian Teacher is a grand and moving family drama set against the pretention, prestige and pomp of the international art world. It tells the story of Pinch, the son of the infamous and egotistical artist Bear Bavinsky, who has spent his life living in the shadows of his father’s godlike status. But as Pinch’s own career aspirations dwindle in the wake of his father’s death, he is forced to enact an unexpected rebellion that will leave his mark upon the Bear Bavinsky legacy. In The Italian Teacher, Rachman explores themes of familial loyalty, authenticity and selfhood and asks, does a masterpiece give us license to forgive the sins of the artist?
